Birthing Your True Self: How Somatic Wisdom and Mother Energy Heal the Mind

In life, there are many that succumb to their circumstances. Not knowing that anything else is even possible, because it hasn’t been brought to their awareness.

Life happens based on our limited perspectives, and doing anything different is something often labelled as delusional… until it works out.

Until they can see the proof that the madness had actual purpose.

For me, I always fought against what was “normal” in the lineage that I grew up in, but I also didn’t know anything else was possible, so instead I went into depressive like states, what some may suggest as not being in alignment with who our soul came here to be.

At the moment I am writing this, I’ve unlearned and learned a whole ton about what can actually be possible for us in this lifetime, and that is literally anything you put your mind and action towards.

It typically takes one person, one thought process that erupts everything for you to recognize that there is actually something different available. For me, it was an old acquaintance that I was witnessing making changes in her life. Showing me a softer side to life. One where I didn’t have to fight against myself and all that I had ever known.

I spent some years in there, following and doing things that she taught me, connecting to different layers of possible income/ career, doing what everybody in that community was doing. It was integral part of my becoming; it is where I connected to plants and the emotional benefits; where I became connected deeper to nature; but also where I wasn’t fully being myself, where I wasn’t creating the life that I was actually here to live.

I was living what was modelled, as most of us do through our familial lines. It’s not an easy thing to rise above what your lineage taught you, in fact, it can be one of the hardest things that you move through.

It wasn’t until I truly connected to my body; through my breath, through my pleasure, through my natural energies that the way in which I am intended to show up, began revealing itself.

Because we can’t do that through the mind alone. Its our bodies that know the way, and society teaches a top down approach … which completely disconnects us.

I had never really put being the creator of my life into perspective before, but this past summer, it hit me hard.

The top down approach that I speak of is what society still primarily relies on. Believing, because this has been the common narrative, that talking alone or healing through our intellectual minds is the catalyst for change. And while our minds and the way that we think absolutely play an imperative role, it also keeps us moving in loops. Continuing with the fears and the anxieties because our brains are designed for survival; biology, neuroscience and psychology all point to the idea that our brains are keeping us in loops of past patterns, what we know based on our programming. Keeping us ‘safe’ (what its job is) as opposed to helping us step into our highest potential, our purpose, our creation.

aka. the unknown. aka. a threat to our systems.

Now while the top down approach is still a commonality amongst a lot of society, there is a massive paradigm shift happening in regards to the potency of bringing our bodies into the work.

Somatic awareness (soma= body) through our breath, through our pleasure (in and our of the bedroom) is what brings us back into the present moment. Arguably, all that truly matters. When we are present (instead of up in our minds), this is where our creation truly happens.

Trust a girl, like I mentioned, this is where the game truly changed for me. &I say this as a woman who once aimed to be a talk therapist and whose life has been twist, turned upside down to show that so much more is possible.

As I mentioned, it was this past summer that did it all in for me. That had me reflect deeper on how I was creating my life (the great things, and the pieces of me that deserved some attention and weren’t necessarily serving my highest good.

You see, I’ve never really felt like a mother. Despite acting as a mother figure for over 15 years, both in my career and as a lucky, bonus mom to the most beautiful boys, I have never been “mom” in the way society teaches you that you must be.

Right before summer hit, the boys’ biological mother made the decision that the boys were no longer coming to our home. There have been unfounded allegations, manipulations and alienation tactics being used over the last several years. Things we’ve navigated and pushed through, and honestly times where I would question whether I wanted to be involved in the chaos that joining this already formed family brought.

They didn’t come home for four whole months. It wasn’t legal. It was completely unfounded. And the allegations and stories changed depending on the day. It was a summer where me and my husband both, went right into our depths. We backtracked … we allowed our grief to get the best of us sometimes, we cried, I screamed. We also got closer.

If there is one thing that I understand about going into our depths, it is that the turmoils and hardships are typically here to show us something.

To bring us into a new level of awareness.

For me in this season, the turmoils and depths brought me into a place, into the lessons of recognizing myself as a mother, a creator.

Again, something, despite all my years, I had never actually considered for myself but in truth, a mother, whether she has birthed an actual child or not, is somebody who nourishes, who takes care, who holds, and who births … actual children .. or creations that come through her.

It is the mother who fiercely protects (mama bear energy), who is patient because she can recognizes our cyclical nature, who is connected to the earth and her lessons.

It is in the reparenting, of ourselves, or maybe our actual children. The holding space for ourselves (and maybe others) when our fears and our doubts creep in during the process’, because they do and they will sometimes take us right down to our knees.

&this is where its all born. Its where our purpose, the creation that we are meant to show up as, can rise.

Mother is creation, not only in the masculine overdrive energy (that the world likes to keep us in); but in sitting with the unseen; in trusting that everything is happening; in allowing and having patience in things growing at their own natural pace.

Being a creator, or in creation is one of the most radical things that you can do in a world that strips us of our creativity (how many people have you heard say that they don’t ‘have a creative bone in their bodies?). It is an act of radical self-responsibility (something we’ve been preaching for a long, long time); its creating kids, projects, and the way you move about your life. It’s taking the opportunities to move forward as opposed the blame and anger for not recognizing that creating the life you are after is actually up to you.

Its creating, despite the fight against yourself (that lives in all of us) through our breath, through our joy, through our pleasure and through the ease that comes as we choose to fall deeper and deeper into ourselves.

Reflect on what falling deeper and deeper into yourself actually means for you in this moment (recognizing that it can and likely will evolve)?

Where in your life are you living out somebody else’ version of success or the way life is to be lived.

What reality are you ready to birth and mother into existence?

If you’re unsure. Give yourself grace here.

We’re taught to disconnect from our creation energy, from who we actually are outside of the narratives of who the world tells us we are supposed to be.
